Gibraltar Literary Festival 2026: dates, tickets and how to go from La Línea

The Gibunco Gibraltar International Literary Festival runs from Monday 9 to Sunday 15 November 2026, and tickets went on sale this week. It is the 12th edition, the headliner is Dame Prue Leith, and for anyone living in La Línea it is one of the few big cultural weeks that sits a walk away from the frontier.

What it is

A week of talks by authors and public figures, spread over venues in the centre of Gibraltar. It is the Rock’s main literary event, run by Gibraltar Cultural Services for the Ministries of Culture and Tourism. The format is simple: you buy a ticket per talk, sit in a hall for about an hour, and the author speaks and takes questions.

The 2026 line-up published on the festival’s site includes Dame Prue Leith, the novelist Arturo Pérez-Reverte, Joanne Harris, the broadcaster John Suchet, the historian and biographer Anne Sebba, Lord Peter Ricketts, Lord Charles Moore, Petroc Trelawny, the Roxy Music guitarist Phil Manzanera, the former Afghan footballer Khalida Popal, and the Vatican’s Archbishop Alfred Xuereb, among some thirty names. The full programme with times and venues is on the festival site; a printed pocket guide is available at the City Hall and John Mackintosh Hall receptions and at the Garrison Library box office.

Tickets and prices

  • Individual talks: £13 adults, £9 students and pensioners.
  • Dame Prue Leith at the John Mackintosh Hall Theatre: £15 adults, £10 students and pensioners.
  • Online through buytickets.gi, or in person at the Garrison Library box office, Monday to Friday, 10am to 4pm.
  • Prices are in pounds sterling. Gibraltar takes euros in most places at a poor rate, but for tickets pay by card or in pounds.

The Government’s release says to book early “to avoid disappointment”. Headline talks at past editions sold out, so if there is one name you want, buy that ticket first and fill the rest of the week later.

Going from La Línea

The frontier is at the south end of La Línea, and the festival venues are in the centre of Gibraltar’s old town: the John Mackintosh Hall on Main Street and the Garrison Library just off it. You cross on foot with your passport or Spanish ID and TIE, walk across the airport runway on the pedestrian crossing, and continue through Casemates Square onto Main Street. It is a flat walk. Our guide to crossing the border between La Línea and Gibraltar covers the documents and the queues.

Evening talks end after dark in November. The frontier is open around the clock, so a late finish is not a problem; check the time of your last session against your own plans for dinner on either side.

Two things to know before you buy

Use the .gi address. The festival’s official site is gibraltarliteraryfestival.gi. The old .com address of the same name now serves a Turkish online-casino page and has nothing to do with the festival. Do not enter card details there.

Times and venues are not all published yet. The dates, prices and line-up above come from the Government’s press release of 3 September and the festival’s own site. Session times, the schools programme and any fringe events were not on the site when we checked. We will update this page when the full programme is out.

What we do not know yet

  • The talk-by-talk timetable and which venue each author is in.
  • Whether there are day passes or bundles; the release lists only single-talk prices.
  • Parking in Gibraltar during the festival week. From La Línea the answer is the usual one: leave the car on the Spanish side and walk.

The photograph on this page shows the frontier crossing with the Rock behind it, not the festival; we do not yet have our own pictures of the venues.
