The NIE fee is €9.84 for the number alone (form EX-15) and €12.00 for the EU registration certificate that carries it (form EX-18). You pay at a bank with the tasa 790-012 slip, and you bring the stamped receipt and the filled form to your appointment. Both forms are here to download, and the fee slip is generated on the police website.
Which form do I need?
EU, EEA or Swiss citizen living in Spain (more than three months, working in Gibraltar and living here counts): you do not apply for the number on its own. You register as a resident with the EX-18, the green certificate, and the NIE comes printed on it. Fee €12.00.
Anyone who needs the number but is not registering as a resident — an EU citizen buying a flat or a car from abroad, a non-EU citizen who has been told to get an NIE for a contract, an inheritance or a job offer: the EX-15. Fee €9.84.
British citizens moving here are third-country nationals since 2021. Your document is the TIE and the process is different; we explain it in the TIE guide. The EX-15 still applies if you only need a number for a purchase and are not moving.
Download the forms
- EX-15 — Solicitud de Número de Identidad de Extranjero (NIE) y certificados (PDF, 3 pages, official ministry form)
- EX-18 — Certificado de registro de ciudadano de la Unión (PDF, 3 pages, official ministry form)
- Tasa 790-012 — the fee slip, generated online on the Policía Nacional site. Choose the line that matches your form, print it, take it to the bank.
The forms are the same PDFs the ministry publishes. We host copies because the ministry has moved its links before and a reader with an appointment tomorrow does not need a 404. If our copy ever differs from the official trámite page, the official page wins.
How the fee is paid
At a bank counter, in person, with the printed 790-012 slip. The police site says it can be paid at “bancos, cajas de ahorro y cooperativas de crédito, en las que no es preciso tener cuenta abierta” — you do not need to be a customer of the bank. The online route needs a Spanish digital certificate or Cl@ve, which a person without an NIE does not yet have, so for a first application the counter is the way. Keep the stamped copy: it is the proof they ask for at the window.
What to bring to the appointment
- The form, filled in and signed. Fill it at home; the office has no spare pens and no patience.
- Your passport (or EU identity card) and a photocopy of the identity pages.
- The stamped 790-012 receipt.
- For the EX-15, the paper that says why you need the number — the purchase contract, the job offer, the letter from the bank or the notary. For the EX-18, proof of what you live on here: a work contract, a Gibraltar payslip, or private health cover plus means, and your empadronamiento if you have it.
- The appointment confirmation, printed or on your phone.
Where
Comisaría de Policía Nacional de La Línea, Avenida Menéndez Pelayo 2, 11300 La Línea de la Concepción (tel. 956 690 619, per the Policía Nacional office locator). Extranjería is by appointment only, booked on the cita previa portal — select Cádiz, then the La Línea office. If La Línea shows nothing for weeks, Algeciras is the other office in the comarca. How the appointment system really behaves, and why you must never buy a slot, is in our cita previa guide.
Ask us to handle it for you
Tell us your situation and we will reply with what we can do and a price. Nothing is stored on this site — the button opens the message in your own WhatsApp (or email) for you to send.
If you would rather not do this alone
Send us a message saying what you need and we will tell you what your options are. Somebody local handles the paperwork end of this for a living, speaks the language of the counter clerk that you and your translation app do not, and knows which window sends people home over a missing photocopy. Tell us what you are trying to do and we will come back to you.
- Getting the cita previa, which is the part that actually stops people, and retrying until one comes.
- Filling the forms properly and telling you exactly which papers to bring.
- Going with you to the office when it helps to have somebody who can argue in Spanish.
- Empadronamiento and the other small steps nobody warns you about.

Tell us what you need and we will quote you before anything starts — and if it is not something we can help with, we will say so rather than take the work. Government fees (the tasa) are separate and are always paid to the bank, never to us. We are not lawyers and we do not handle visa applications; this is practical help with the in-Spain steps, not legal advice.
Fees checked on the Policía Nacional tasas page on 2 September 2026. They change by decree, rarely and by cents; the slip you generate on the day carries the current figure.
